Did you know there are three main schools of aromatherapy around the world? Each one looks at essential oils a little differently and understanding them helps you know why some people use oils in ways that others might not.
1️⃣ The British School
This approach is all about relaxation and massage. Oils are usually diluted in carrier oils and applied during soothing massage sessions. Think spa vibes, calming scents, and self-care.
2️⃣ The German School
In Germany, the focus is on inhalation. Diffusers, steam bowls, even simple deep breaths of oil-soaked cotton balls. Why? Because the scent molecules travel straight to the limbic system in your brain—the area that controls emotions and memory. Powerful stuff!
3️⃣ The French School
The French take a more medical approach. Oils may be applied neat (undiluted), used internally (with guidance), or even prescribed by doctors. It’s much more clinical, and it’s why you’ll see different recommendations depending on which country’s literature you’re reading.
Why does purity matter?
No matter which school you lean toward, the quality of your oils makes all the difference. If an oil is diluted, contaminated, or made with synthetics, you miss the benefits nature intended—and you may even invite harm. This is especially crucial with the French school, since oils there are sometimes used internally or applied undiluted. Only truly pure, tested essential oils are safe enough for that level of use.
The beauty? You don’t have to pick just one! You can enjoy the spa-like relaxation of the British, the emotional benefits of the German, and the confident use of oils for wellness the French promote—all while staying safe and intentional.
