Healthy Hearts and Homes – Let’s Thrive in Twenty-Five!

February 12, 20252 min read

As we navigate the uncertainties and stress of today’s world, it’s more important than ever to focus on staying healthy and strong. February is Heart Health month and we’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day so this is a perfect time to prioritize self-care and family well-being. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day so let’s take small, intentional steps that lead to big impacts on the health of our hearts and our homes.

Your heart works constantly to keep you alive and well. Stress, poor nutrition, and lack of movement can take a toll on this vital organ. This month, let’s choose to embrace some simple, heart-healthy habits:

  1. Move Daily – Whether it’s walking, dancing, yoga, going to the gym, or some other activity that you love, find ways to get your heart pumping.

  2. Nourish Wisely – Add heart-loving foods like leafy greens, berries, nuts, and omega-3-rich foods to your meals.

  3. Manage Stress – Deep breathing, prayer, meditation, or diffusing essential oils like lavender or orange can help calm the storm.

  4. Share the Love – Social connections can improve heart health. Call a friend, volunteer, or enjoy time with loved ones.

Just as our physical hearts need care, so do the spaces where we live. A healthier home isn’t just about appearances; it’s about removing hidden dangers lurking in everyday products. Many conventional cleaning and personal care items contain harsh chemicals that can disrupt hormones, irritate skin, and burden your immune system.

Check the labels on the products under your sink and in your bathrooms. Here are some "heavy hitters" that you’ll want to eliminate from your home:

  • Phthalates – Common in synthetic fragrances, these are endocrine disruptors that can wreak havoc on your body. Words like “fragrance,” “parfum,” or “perfume,” should alert you to the fact there could be phthalates in those products.

  • Triclosan – Found in antibacterial products, triclosan is linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance. Think creation of “super bugs!”

  • Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES) – These are foaming agents in shampoos and cleaners that can cause skin irritation. Remember, what you put onto your skin goes into your body!

  • Ammonia – Often found in glass cleaners, ammonia can irritate your lungs and eyes.

  • Chlorine – Found in bleach-based products, chlorine is corrosive and can cause respiratory issues and skin irritation.

  • Parabens – These are preservatives that are added to personal care products. They mimic estrogen and disrupt hormonal balance in people of all ages.

By swapping out toxic products for natural alternatives, you can protect your health while creating a haven of wellness in your home. Consider using products made with plant-based ingredients.

This year let’s do more than survive – we can thrive!! This month, choose to take a few simple steps that focus on the health of your heart and your home. Let’s ensure our bodies are vibrant and our homes are a haven for all who enter!
